Giftun Islands
Islands Red Sea islands with coral reefs and popular snorkeling
Two Red Sea islands off Hurghada popular for day trips, snorkeling and coral reefs. Tour operators run speedboat excursions to sandy coves and shallow reefs rich in marine life.
The Giftun Islands are a pair of uninhabited coral islands in the Red Sea off the coast of Hurghada in Egypt’s Red Sea Governorate. They are popular for snorkeling, diving and beach excursions.
The two principal islands are commonly referred to as Giftun Kebir (Big Giftun) and Giftun Soraya (Small Giftun); both feature sand beaches, shallow reef areas and clear water suited to day trips from Hurghada.
The islands have no permanent settlements and are visited mainly by tour boats and dive operators who bring visitors to swim, snorkel and view reef life.
They lie offshore from the city of Hurghada on Egypt’s Red Sea coast and are reached by short boat trips from the mainland.
- Day-trip snorkeling: The islands are uninhabited and are among the most common day-trip destinations for snorkeling and diving from Hurghada because of nearby coral reefs.
What to See #
- Giftun Kebir (Big Giftun): Giftun Kebir (Big Giftun) is the larger of the two main islands and is known for sandy beaches and coral fringing reefs used for snorkeling and diving trips from Hurghada.
- Giftun Soraya (Small Giftun): Giftun Soraya (Small Giftun) is smaller and quieter, with shallow reef flats and sheltered bays frequented by day-trip operators and snorkelers.
