Gibeah at a Glance#
About Gibeah#
Gibeah is an ancient site in the region of Benjamin in the central hill country of historic Palestine, identified by many scholars with the archaeological mound known as Tell el-Ful. It is best known for its association in the Hebrew Bible with King Saul.
Archaeological remains at the tell include traces of an ancient fortified settlement spanning Iron Age occupation levels linked to the biblical period. The site appears in several biblical narratives and is therefore studied for its historical and religious significance.
Historically it is described in biblical sources as a seat of power in the early Israelite monarchy and as the scene of several events recorded in Judges and Samuel. Over time the tell has been subject to archaeological survey and excavation that seek to correlate material remains with textual accounts.
The site sits north of Jerusalem in the West Bank, on a prominent hill (Tell el-Ful) visible from surrounding valleys and close to modern Palestinian localities.
