Giannutri
Island Small Tuscan island with Roman ruins and marine scenery
Off Tuscany’s Argentario, Giannutri offers crystal-clear water, sheltered coves and Roman remains along its coast; boat trips, snorkeling and short walks to archaeological ruins attract day-trippers from nearby islands and the mainland.
Giannutri is a small island in the Tyrrhenian Sea and the southernmost island of the Tuscan Archipelago. The island is sparsely inhabited and is best known for the archaeological remains of a Roman villa and associated maritime structures on its sheltered eastern bay.
Visitors commonly explore the Roman ruins at Cala Maestra, where masonry, seawalls and traces of buildings survive from the Roman imperial period. The island’s coastline and clear waters also attract boaters and snorkellers, but on-island services are limited.
Giannutri lies off the southern coast of Tuscany, south of the Monte Argentario peninsula, and forms part of the region’s archipelago of islands.
