Ghoufi

Ghoufi refers to a dramatic canyon and series of cliff-side settlements in Batna Province, northeastern Algeria, often described for its troglodyte villages and narrow, fertile wadi corridor. The site is noted for its cliff-face dwellings, terraces and pockets of palm vegetation within the gorge.

The vertical arrangement of rock-built houses and narrow agricultural terraces that follow the canyon floor, offering a compact landscape of human habitation adapted to steep terrain. The area is best explored on foot along local paths that traverse parts of the gorge.

Settlement in the canyon has a long history tied to Amazigh communities who adapted construction and irrigation techniques to the steep environment. Many structures and terraces reflect traditional building methods and long-established patterns of land use.

The canyon sits in the Aurès region of Batna Province in northeastern Algeria, set within a mountainous and semi-arid landscape. It is accessed from nearby towns in the province and lies away from major coastal centres.
