Geysir
Building Geothermal field with erupting hot springs and geysers
A geothermal area in Haukadalur known for hot springs and geysers, including the historically named Geysir and the frequently erupting Strokkur. Visitors walk boardwalks, watch eruptions, and study bubbling pools.
Geysir refers to the geothermal area in the Haukadalur valley of southwest Iceland that contains the historic Great Geysir and several active hot springs. The site is a major geothermal attraction on the Golden Circle route.
The main visitor draw is Strokkur, a geyser that erupts frequently to heights of roughly 15 to 20 metres, providing repeated, predictable displays. The larger Great Geysir is the namesake of all geysers but today erupts only rarely; the field also includes steaming vents, boiling pools and colorful mineral deposits.
Boardwalks and marked paths allow close viewing while protecting fragile ground; information panels explain geothermal processes and safety rules. The area is compact and usually visited as part of a loop together with nearby Golden Circle sites.
The geothermal features have been known and described for centuries and were popularised by tourists from the 18th century onward. Human activity and earthquakes have periodically altered the activity of the Great Geysir, while Strokkur has remained reliably active in recent decades.
The geothermal field sits in the Haukadalur valley in southwest Iceland, inland from the south coast and commonly reached on day trips from Reykjavík as part of the Golden Circle.
- Eruption frequency: Strokkur typically erupts every 5 to 10 minutes, making it the most reliable spectacle in the Haukadalur geothermal area; the historic Great Geysir is infrequently active.
What to See #
- Strokkur: The active eruption feature commonly visited is **Strokkur**, a nearby geyser that erupts regularly every few minutes and reaches heights up to around 20 metres.
- Geysir and geothermal field: The larger Geysir (Great Geysir) lent its name to the phenomenon but is mostly dormant; the field contains multiple hot springs, bubbling pools and fumaroles arranged along boardwalks.
How to Get to Geysir #
Located along the Golden Circle route, about 100 km east of Reykjavík on Route 35. There is parking adjacent to the geothermal field and a visitor centre (Geysir Centre) with access paths.
Tips for Visiting Geysir #
- Watch Strokkur - the predictable, 10-15 minute eruption intervals make it the star of the valley.
- Bring a windproof jacket: steam and spatter can soak clothing even on mild days.
- Visit the small Geysir Center for displays on geothermal energy and local geology; combine with the neighbouring geothermal area and hiking trails.
Best Time to Visit Geysir #
Summer for ease and full services; winter for drama and fewer crowds, but check road conditions.
