Getbol, the Korean Tidal Flats, are a series of intertidal mud- and sand-flats along the western coast of the Korean Peninsula notable for their ecological productivity and role in migratory bird networks. The flats support benthic communities and provide feeding and resting habitat for migratory shorebirds.
Large expanses of exposed mudflats and tidal channels are revealed at low tide, with visible flocks of wading birds and intertidal invertebrate life. The site comprises multiple separated coastal flats that together form an internationally important tidal ecosystem.
These tidal systems are natural coastal features formed by sediment deposition and tidal dynamics; they have been used for traditional fisheries and shellfishing by local communities. Their ecological importance has been recognized in recent conservation designations.
The flats are located along the west coast of South Korea in South Jeolla Province and other coastal provinces, occupying broad intertidal zones between land and sea.
- Best time to observe: The tidal flats are most active and visible to birdwatchers at low tide when extensive mud and sandflats are exposed, and during spring and autumn migration seasons.
