About Germa Necropolis#
The Germa Necropolis is an archaeological cemetery complex associated with the ancient city of Germa, the capital of the Garamantian kingdom in the Fezzan region of southwestern Libya.
The necropolis contains burial structures and funerary features attributed to the Garamantes, a Saharan oasis civilization that was active from the first millennium BCE into the early centuries CE; the cemetery includes tumuli and other burial forms in the surrounding desert. The site is primarily visited for its archaeological remains rather than developed tourist facilities.
Germa rose as the political centre of the Garamantian state and the necropolis served as the principal burial area for elite and community interments connected to that polity. Over time the site fell out of use with the decline of the Garamantian culture and today survives as an archaeological landscape.
The necropolis is located in Libya’s Fezzan region near the modern settlement of Germa in Wadi al Hayaa District, within the greater Sahara Desert of southwestern Libya.
