Main image

The Georgia Dome was a large multi-purpose domed stadium in downtown Atlanta, Georgia, that opened in 1992 and served as a major sports and events venue for more than two decades. It was the long-time home stadium of the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons and hosted numerous major sporting and entertainment events.

Built and operated as a state-financed stadium that opened in 1992, it served as Atlanta’s primary large indoor stadium until being supplanted by Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The Georgia Dome closed following the 2016 NFL season and was demolished in 2017.

The stadium stood in downtown Atlanta adjacent to the Georgia World Congress Center and Centennial Olympic Park, occupying a central position within the city’s sports and convention district.

  • Capacity and fate: Seating capacity was approximately 71,000 for football and larger configurations were used for special events; the venue closed after the opening of Mercedes-Benz Stadium and was demolished in 2017.
