Geoje is reached most easily via Busan's Gimhae International Airport or by rail to Busan followed by an intercity bus. There is no railway onto the island itself, so plan transfers by bus, taxi or car over the Geoga Bridge.
Gimhae International Airport (PUS): The main airport for reaching Geoje is Busan’s Gimhae International Airport. From Gimhae you can take the Busan Metro Line 1 to Busan Station or Sasang (fare about KRW 1,400-2,000, 30-50 minutes), then transfer to an intercity/express bus to Geoje (see Bus paragraph in the next card). There are also airport limousine buses and direct airport-to-city buses; combined transfer time to Geoje is typically 1.5-2.5 hours depending on connections. A taxi from Gimhae to Geoje (via the Geoga Bridge) will take about 60-90 minutes and typically costs around KRW 90,000-140,000.
Ulsan Airport (USN): Ulsan is a secondary option for some domestic flights. From Ulsan Airport you can take a local bus or taxi to Ulsan Intercity Bus Terminal and catch an intercity bus toward Geoje or nearby Tongyeong; travel time by road is roughly 60-90 minutes and fares for intercity buses are commonly in the KRW 7,000-12,000 range. Taxis from Ulsan Airport to Geoje are faster but pricier (roughly KRW 80,000-120,000).
Train: There is no direct rail service to Geoje. The nearest major rail hub is Busan Station (KTX and regional trains). From Busan Station take an intercity/express bus to Geoje - buses run frequently from Busan and the ride takes about 60-90 minutes; expect fares around KRW 7,000-9,000. Use Busan Station as your rail-to-bus transfer point; allow extra time for luggage and transfers.
Bus: Intercity and express buses are the most common way to reach Geoje. Buses depart from Busan’s intercity terminals (for example, Busan Central/Seobu/Sasang terminals) to Geoje Gohyeon (Geoje Intercity Bus Terminal); journey time is generally 60-90 minutes and fares are usually KRW 7,000-9,000. Within Geoje, local city buses connect main towns, tourist spots and ferry piers; local fares are paid with a T-money card or cash and are typically KRW 1,200-2,000 per ride.
How to Get Around Geoje
Geoje is best navigated by a mix of intercity buses, local buses and taxis; renting a car gives the most freedom for exploring coastal spots. Walking works well for short town-centre strolls and harbour areas, but expect to rely on motor transport for longer distances and island-hopping.
- Intercity & Local Bus (KRW 1,200-9,000) - Intercity buses connect Busan, Ulsan and other regional hubs with Geoje's Gohyeon (Geoje Intercity Bus Terminal). On-island city buses run between Gohyeon, Okpo, Jangpyeong and popular beaches; schedules can be infrequent outside peak hours, so check timetables. Pay with a T-money card for the best convenience; expect local fares around KRW 1,200-2,000 and intercity fares of KRW 7,000-9,000.
- Taxi / Kakao T (KRW 3,000-120,000) - Taxis are plentiful in Geoje and convenient for door-to-door travel, especially if you have luggage or are heading to scattered beaches and parks. Use the Kakao T app to call taxis in English-friendly areas; short trips within town are inexpensive (KRW 3,000-10,000) but longer rides across the island or to/from Busan will cost considerably more (KRW 40,000-120,000). Card payment is widely accepted but carry some cash for smaller drivers.
- Car (rental / driving) (KRW 40,000-80,000 per day) - Renting a car is one of the most practical ways to explore Geoje and the surrounding coast - driving gives you flexibility for beaches, Oedo and small fishing ports. Roads are generally good and the Geoga Bridge provides a direct link to Busan (note the toll). Daily rental rates typically run about KRW 40,000-80,000 depending on season and vehicle class; parking is usually available at major sights but can fill up in summer.
- Ferries & Sightseeing Boats (Varies by route (usually modest single-trip fares)) - Boat services and tour boats operate from ports around Geoje to nearby islands and attractions (for example trips to botanical islands and coastal tours). Schedules depend on season and weather; short sightseeing or island-landing boat trips typically take 20-60 minutes. Book tickets at local piers or through tour operators; fares vary by route and operator but expect modest single-trip prices.
- Bicycle & Scooter (KRW 5,000-20,000) - Bicycles and electric scooters are a pleasant way to explore smaller areas around Gohyeon and seaside promenades. Rentals are available at tourist spots and some guesthouses; use caution on busier roads and hilly sections. Daily rental fees are generally inexpensive and make short hops between attractions easy.
- Walking - Many of Geoje's highlights - harbourfronts, promenades and compact neighbourhoods - are best enjoyed on foot. Walking is often the fastest way to explore local docks, cafes and viewpoints once you're in a town, though distances between some beaches and attractions can be long so combine walking with buses, taxis or a rental car.
