Gemiler Island

Gemiler Island is a small island off the coast of Mu
1fla Province near Fethiye, Turkey, containing visible ruins from the Byzantine period. The island preserves multiple ruined churches, burial chambers and coastal structures from the early Christian era.

Ruins are spread over terraced slopes and include church foundations, apses and rock-cut tombs, reflecting the island’s past use as a monastic and pilgrimage site. The site offers short hikes between the ruins and viewpoints with sea views.

The island was used in late antiquity and the Byzantine period for Christian worship and burial, leaving a concentration of ecclesiastical remains. Local tradition also links the island to itinerant saints and pilgrimage activity.

Gemiler Island lies off the southwest Turkish coast near Fethiye and Ölüdeniz and is typically reached by small boat tours or private boats from the mainland. Landings are made at small beaches or harbours on the island.
