Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister

The Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister is Dresden’s principal museum for European paintings from the 15th to the 18th centuries, housed in the Zwinger and adjacent Semper gallery complex. Its collection originated in the picture chambers of Saxon electors and kings and is one of Germany’s most important Old Masters collections.

The gallery displays several hundred paintings by Italian, Dutch and German masters, including major works by Raphael, Titian, Rembrandt and Vermeer. Exhibition rooms are arranged by school and period, with some single works presented in dedicated, large-scale rooms to match their historical importance.

The core collection was assembled by Saxon rulers across the 16th to 18th centuries and expanded through court purchases and diplomatic gifts. The collection has been housed in the Zwinger and Semper buildings since the 19th century and underwent evacuations and recoveries during and after World War II.

The museum sits in Dresden’s historic centre within the Zwinger/Semper complex on the Elbe riverfront, adjacent to other Staatliche Kunstsammlungen institutions and within walking distance of the historic old town.
