Gedenkstätte Berliner Mauer

The Gedenkstätte Berliner Mauer is Berlin’s central memorial to the division of the city and the victims of the Berlin Wall, located on Bernauer Straße. It was established as a memorial site in the late 1990s to preserve a representative section of the former border.

The memorial documents the history of the Berlin Wall which divided the city from 1961 to 1989 and was the scene of numerous escape attempts and fatalities. The location on Bernauer Straße is significant because it was a focal point of the division and of several high-profile border incidents; the site was later developed into a public memorial and educational center.

The memorial runs along Bernauer Straße in the Mitte district of Berlin, north of the city center and close to Gesundbrunnen and Wedding. It is accessible by S- and U-Bahn and sits within an urban streetscape that preserves the former border line.

• Visiting tip: Best light for photography is often in the morning on the western side of the preserved strip; much of the outdoor exhibition is accessible year-round.

• Preserved wall strip and watchtower: A preserved stretch of the border installation including a section of original Wall, the adjacent "death strip" and a guard tower that illustrate the physical separation between East and West Berlin.
• Documentation Center: The Documentation Center with a permanent indoor exhibition explaining the division of Berlin and the politics and human impact of the Wall.
• Chapel of Reconciliation: The Chapel of Reconciliation stands near the memorial site on Bernauer Straße and marks the place where an earlier chapel once stood before being demolished during the Wall period.
