Gebel el-Silsila
Archaeological Site Ancient Nile quarry and temple complex in Upper Egypt
Between Edfu and Kom Ombo, Gebel el‑Silsila contains New Kingdom sandstone quarries, rock‑cut shrines and carved scenes of pharaohs; Nile cruises and archaeologists stop to study quarry marks and riverside reliefs.
Gebel el‑Silsila is an ancient sandstone quarry site and complex of rock-cut shrines on the Nile’s west bank in Upper Egypt, in Aswan Governorate. It was an important source of sandstone for Egyptian temple building from at least the New Kingdom onward.
The site consists of worked quarry faces, unfinished stone blocks and numerous rock-cut chapels, stelae and inscriptions carved into the cliffs. Many of the visible reliefs and carvings date to the New Kingdom and later, recording quarrying expeditions and religious dedications.
Egyptians quarried sandstone here for centuries to supply temples and monuments in the Nile Valley; inscriptions and chapels carved into the rock record the names of kings, officials and quarry crews. Use continued into later Pharaonic and Greco‑Roman periods, leaving a long archaeological sequence of quarrying activity.
Gebel el‑Silsila lies on the west bank of the Nile between the ancient sites of Edfu and Kom Ombo in Upper Egypt, and is commonly visited from river cruise boats that stop at landing points along the cliffs.
