Gazala is a coastal locality in eastern Libya’s Cyrenaica region and was the site of major World War II fighting in 1942. The area is historically significant for the desert battles between Axis and Allied forces during the North African campaign.
The most notable event was the Battle of Gazala in May-June 1942, where Axis forces under Field Marshal Erwin Rommel engaged Allied formations; the battle culminated in the Axis capture of Tobruk in June 1942. Remnants of fortifications, tank tracks and battlefield debris remain in the region, and there are scattered memorials and cemeteries associated with the campaign.
Gazala lies on the eastern Libyan coast in Derna District within the historical region of Cyrenaica, situated along the coastal corridor between Benghazi and Tobruk.
