Gauja National Park is Latvia’s largest national park, established in 1973 and covering roughly 917 square kilometres of the Gauja River basin. It is designated for both natural and cultural preservation within Vidzeme.

  • Visiting tips: Best low-season months for fewer visitors and clearer trails are October through April, while summer offers river activities and well-served visitor centres in Sigulda and Cēsis.
  • Terrain: Look for sandstone formations and caves concentrated near Sigulda and the Turaida area; some sites have steep steps and uneven surfaces, so sturdy footwear is recommended.

What to See #

  • Gauja River valley and cliffs: Large sandstone outcrops, caves and river valleys concentrated along the Gauja River that are popular for hiking and sightseeing, including the Gūtmaņa Cave with its inscriptions and red sandstone walls.
  • Sigulda-Turaida cultural area: A collection of historical sites and wooden architecture clustered around Sigulda and Turaida that form the cultural core of the park and include several castles and museum reserves.
  • Trails and nature reserves: Established footpaths and nature trails such as the Ligatne trails and several marked cycling routes that provide access to woodland, birdwatching points and geological features across the park.

How to Get to Gauja National Park #

Gauja National Park is accessed from Riga by road or rail to the park’s main towns. Driving from Riga to Sigulda (a principal gateway) is about 50 km on the A2 (roughly 45-60 minutes). Regular trains and buses run from Riga to Sigulda (about an hour by train); from Sigulda station many trails, castles and trailheads are a short walk or a brief local-bus/taxi ride away.

Tips for Visiting Gauja National Park #

  • Use Sigulda as your main gateway-most visitor services, trails, and cable‑car crossings into Gauja Valley are accessed from Sigulda and it's the best base for planned day hikes.
  • Head out early on popular trailheads (for example toward Turaida Castle and Gutmanis Cave) to avoid mid‑day coach groups; these spots are busiest from late morning to mid‑afternoon.
  • Explore lesser‑visited trails north of Sigulda and along quieter stretches of the river valley if you want solitude; many visitors stick to the main viewpoints and castle areas and miss the quieter forest trails.
