Gatun Lake
Reservoir Artificial Panama lake forming part of Panama Canal
Part of the Panama Canal system, Gatun Lake formed after damming the Chagres River. Visitors watch ships transiting locks, take boat trips among its forested islands, fish and spot waterbirds along the lake’s shores.
Gatun Lake is an artificial freshwater lake on the Atlantic side of the Panama Canal created in the early 20th century by damming the Chagres River. It was formed as a central element of the Panama Canal project to provide water for the lock system and a navigable transitway for ships.
The lake covers hundreds of square kilometres and is traversed by canal traffic for a significant portion of the canal transit, with ships passing through lock complexes at either end. The lake contains numerous islands and forested shorelines that support birds, mammals and freshwater fish.
Gatun Lake was completed during construction of the Panama Canal and has since operated as part of the canal’s water-management and navigation system, supplying lockage water and serving as a major freshwater reservoir for the canal’s operation.
The lake lies east of Panama City in central Panama and forms part of the canal corridor; many viewpoints and boat tours operate from nearby canal towns and facilities.
- Origin and function: Formed by damming the Chagres River in the early 20th century as part of the Panama Canal project, the lake serves as a freshwater reservoir and transitway for ships crossing the isthmus.
- Navigation and wildlife: The lake is crossed by canal traffic for many kilometres and contains numerous small islands that provide wildlife habitat and shoreline scenery.
What to See #
- Gatun Locks: Gatun Locks, the lock complex that raises and lowers ships between sea level and the water level of the lake on the Atlantic side of the Panama Canal.
- Gatun Dam: Gatun Dam, the structure that impounds the Chagres River to form the lake and provides the freshwater reservoir used by the Panama Canal.
How to Get to Gatun Lake #
Gatun Lake sits within the Panama Canal corridor between Colón and Gamboa and is most easily reached from Panama City. By car take the Pan-American/Interamericana route toward Colón (signposted Panama-Colón) - the Gatun Locks/Gamboa area is roughly 35-45 km from central Panama City (allow 45-60 minutes depending on traffic). Organized half‑day and full‑day boat tours and canal excursions depart from Panama City and from Gamboa, and there are short walks from parking/viewpoint areas at the Gatun Locks to canal viewpoints.
Tips for Visiting Gatun Lake #
- Best time: take a boat tour at first light when the lake is calm and wildlife (howler monkeys, toucans and sloths along the shoreline) is most active and lighting is best for photos.
- Which entrance/gateway: use Gamboa or Colón as your gateway - Gamboa-based operators run shorter wildlife-focused lake trips while Colón/Shelter Bay operators serve longer crossings and canal-viewing excursions.
- What most people miss: spend time exploring the small forested islands and shoreline channels rather than just watching ships - these edges hold the best birding and monkey sightings.
- Avoiding crowds: skip mid‑day cruise-ship windows in Colón by booking an early-morning private or small-group boat from Gamboa, or time your visit on weekdays rather than when cruise ships dock.
