Gate of the Sun
Monument Pre-Columbian carved stone gateway at Tiwanaku archaeological site
Pre‑Inca carved stone at Tiwanaku bearing sun‑deity reliefs; part of a larger archaeological complex on the Altiplano. Tourists visit for Andean archaeology and guided excursions from La Paz.
The Gate of the Sun is a carved stone monolith located at the Tiwanaku archaeological site in the La Paz Department of Bolivia, near the southern shore of Lake Titicaca. It is a pre-Columbian monumental lintel featuring a central deity motif and surrounding carved figures.
The lintel is set within the broader Tiwanaku ruin complex and is one of the site’s most photographed elements for its iconography. Visitors see detailed relief carving on the stone and the surrounding plaza and ruined structures of Tiwanaku.
Archaeologists attribute the gate to the Tiwanaku culture; it was part of the ceremonial architecture of the site and has been studied as an important example of Andean stone carving and iconography.
The gate stands at the Tiwanaku archaeological site, in the high plain west of Lake Titicaca, approximately within the La Paz Department. The site is accessed by road from the city of La Paz and nearby towns in the Tiwanaku area.
- Best viewing tip: Located within the Tiwanaku archaeological complex, the gateway is best viewed as part of a wider visit to the site's plaza and ruins; light and shadow in the morning often bring out carved details.
How to Get to Gate of the Sun #
The Gate of the Sun (the monolithic stone at the Tiwanaku archaeological site) lies beside the village of Tiwanaku northwest of La Paz. It is reached by road from La Paz - the drive is roughly around 70 km depending on route and can take 1.5-2 hours by car. Tips for Visiting Gate of the Sun #
- Arrive at the Tiwanaku archaeological site early in the morning (as soon as it opens) to see the Gate of the Sun before tour buses from La Paz arrive and to avoid the high-altitude crowds; many organized tours arrive mid- to late-morning.
- Access the monument via the main Tiwanaku site entrance and include the on-site museum in your visit - the museum contains context for the Gate's iconography that many day-trippers skip.
- Travel from La Paz on an early bus or shared taxi and allow time to acclimatize in town beforehand; guided visits that start early are the best way to avoid the mid-day peak of visiting groups.
