Gastown
Historical Site Historic Vancouver neighbourhood featuring the famous steam clock
Vancouver’s Gastown neighborhood features cobbled streets, the Steam Clock, galleries, restaurants and Victorian architecture; tourists come for food, nightlife and heritage walking routes.
Gastown is the original settlement and historic district of Vancouver, British Columbia, centred on Water Street in the city’s downtown. It dates to the late 1860s and is preserved for its 19th-century streetscape and converted warehouse buildings.
The district is known for its cobbled streets, Victorian-era and early 20th-century brick buildings, independent shops, galleries, and restaurants clustered along Water Street. A notable landmark is the Steam Clock at Water and Cambie, installed in 1977 and popular for photographs.
A second layer of attractions includes public art, period storefronts, and the bronze statue of “Gassy” Jack Deighton that marks the neighbourhood’s founding moment in 1867. Gastown functions as both a daytime shopping area and an evening dining and nightlife quarter.
Gastown grew up around the Hastings Mill and the arrival of English barkeeper John “Gassy Jack” Deighton in 1867. The area developed through the late 19th and early 20th centuries as Vancouver expanded and later underwent conservation and restoration which preserved its historic streetscape.
Located in downtown Vancouver, Gastown lies immediately east of the central waterfront and north of Vancouver’s Chinatown, within easy walking distance of Canada Place and other central city attractions.
- Best time to visit: Best viewed early morning or on weekdays to avoid crowds around the Steam Clock and the main cobbled streets.
- Central location: The neighbourhood sits immediately east of Vancouver's central waterfront and is contiguous with the city's older commercial district.
What to See #
- Steam Clock: A steam-powered street clock installed at the corner of Water Street and Cambie Street, built in 1977 and now one of Gastown's most photographed features.
- Gassy Jack statue: A bronze statue commemorating 'Gassy' Jack Deighton, the English bar owner whose 1867 arrival is linked to the neighbourhood's name.
- Water Street and cobbled lanes: Water Street and adjacent cobbled lanes that form the historic commercial spine, lined with restored brick warehouses now housing shops, restaurants, and galleries.
How to Get to Gastown #
From downtown Vancouver: Waterfront Station (SkyTrain Expo and Canada Lines, SeaBus) is a 2-5 minute walk to the south end of Gastown. From Granville Street, walk north along Seymour or Cambie for 8-12 minutes. Driving is possible but parking is limited; consider public transit.
Tips for Visiting Gastown #
- See the steam clock at the corner of Water Street and Cambie Street early (before 10am) to avoid souvenir-shop crowds and hear it whistle on the quarter hour.
- Walk the cobbled alleys off Water Street - the side streets (Alexander and Maple) hold plaques and small artisan shops that most tour groups miss.
- If arriving by SkyTrain, exit Waterfront Station (Canada Line/Expo Line) and walk north along Water Street; for photos, head to the Gastown Steam Clock from the south so the rising steam backlights the brickwork.
- Evenings can be lively; pick a weekday for quieter cafés and better table service.
