Gasherbrum I
Mountain Eight-thousander mountain in Karakoram, extremely challenging climb
Hidden Peak (Gasherbrum I) is an eight‑thousander in the Karakoram; high‑altitude mountaineers attempt technical ascents, glacier approaches and extended expeditions from Gilgit‑Baltistan.
Gasherbrum I is a mountain in the Karakoram range on the Pakistan-China border that reaches an elevation of 8,080 metres. It is one of the world’s 14 eight-thousanders and is known in mountaineering circles as a high, technical peak.
Climbing the mountain involves long approaches across the Baltoro Glacier system and technical high-altitude routes; expeditions are logistically complex due to the remoteness. The summit is sought by experienced high-altitude mountaineers and is typically attempted in the summer climbing season.
The peak is part of the Gasherbrum massif and has been the objective of international climbing expeditions since the mid 20th century. Its glaciers and ridges sit within the greater Karakoram landscape of steep peaks and deep glacial valleys.
Geographically the mountain lies in Gilgit-Baltistan within the central Karakoram, reached via long treks from base camps on the Baltoro Glacier and approached through Pakistan’s northern mountain valleys.
- Eight-thousander status: One of the world's 14 mountains higher than 8,000 metres, noted for its remote Karakoram location and technical climbing routes.
How to Get to Gasherbrum I #

Typical access is to fly to Islamabad then take a domestic flight to Skardu or Gilgit, followed by a multi-day jeep/overland drive to the village of Askole; from Askole climbers begin a long trek up the Baltoro Glacier to Concordia and on to the Gasherbrum base camps. There are no road links to basecamp-expect extended trekking and glacier travel after the last motorable point.
Tips for Visiting Gasherbrum I #
- Approaches to Gasherbrum I start from Skardu and proceed overland to Askole then via the Baltoro Glacier to Concordia; plan logistics (permits, porters, glacier transport) well in advance through a licensed expedition operator.
- Climbing is confined to the summer window (roughly late June-August) when high‑altitude weather is most stable; allow additional days in your schedule for weather delays and gradual acclimatisation at successive high camps.
- Secure the required Pakistani climbing permits and a local liaison officer before travel; international expeditions typically arrange these through the Alpine Club of Pakistan or licensed local agents - don't attempt to improvise on arrival.
