Main image

Garphyttan National Park is a compact protected area in Örebro County in south-central Sweden, established to conserve a mosaic of open meadows and broad-leaved woodland. It is one of Sweden’s older national parks and protects a traditional agricultural landscape with high biodiversity.

Within a small area visitors find semi-natural grasslands, scattered veteran trees, and patches of mixed deciduous forest that are notable for spring wildflowers and diverse birdlife. Paths and short trails allow close observation of meadow habitats and forest edges; the park is valued for species typical of traditionally managed pastures and hay meadows.

The park was created to protect the local mosaic of meadows and woodland that developed under long-term traditional land use. Management focuses on maintaining open grassland through grazing or mowing where needed to preserve plant and insect communities.

Garphyttan National Park lies south of Örebro in Örebro County, near the small settlement of Garphyttan, on relatively flat terrain characteristic of the surrounding agricultural landscape. It is readily reached from the nearby towns and is a short drive from Örebro.

  • Size and access: The park is small and accessible on foot, with short marked paths that pass through species-rich meadows and old-growth deciduous stands.
