Hjälmaren Lake

Hjälmaren is a substantial inland lake in central Sweden, positioned between the provinces of Närke and Södermanland and surrounded by agricultural land and small urban centres. The lake is one of the larger Swedish lakes and is used for recreation, local fisheries and boating.

The easiest way to reach the lakeshore is by car via local and regional roads from Örebro or Västerås; both Örebro and Västerås are served by regular SJ and regional trains from Stockholm. From either city you can reach lakeside towns and beaches by local bus services or a short drive.

• Use Örebro as the main gateway - it's the largest nearby city with lakeside access and boat-launch facilities, making it a convenient base for day trips around the lake.
• If you want quieter shoreline access, aim for weekday mornings or explore smaller public beaches and nature reserves around the lake rather than the main harbours, which fill up with weekend boat traffic.
