Gaochang is the extensive ruined city and archaeological site east of Turpan in Xinjiang, China, that served as a major Silk Road oasis and trading center. The surviving remains include sections of city walls, foundations of temples and houses, and other urban features that reflect centuries of occupation.
Highlights on site are the outlines of the rectangular city walls and the dispersed temple and domestic ruins that convey the scale of the former urban center. The site illustrates settlement patterns and cultural interchange on the northern Silk Road corridor.
Gaochang grew from a small settlement into a regional capital and key caravan stop between roughly the early centuries of the first millennium and the late medieval period, experiencing phases of control by local kingdoms, Turkic polities, and later Mongol-era authorities. It declined and was abandoned as trade routes shifted and oasis resources diminished.
The ruins are located roughly 30 kilometers east of modern Turpan, set on the alluvial plain near the edges of the surrounding desert and basins of the Turpan Depression.
