How to Get to Ganvie

Ganvie is a lake village best reached via Cotonou (Cadjehoun Airport) followed by a short road transfer to the lake jetties and a motorboat crossing. The boat ride from the dock is the defining part of the trip and the only way onto the village itself.

By Air

Cadjehoun Airport / Cotonou (COO): Cotonou is the main international airport for southern Benin and the gateway to Ganvie. From Cotonou, you travel by road to the lakeside jetties near Ganvie and then continue by boat; the road trip to the docks is short and taxis or moto-taxis are readily available.

Porto-Novo / regional airfields: Porto-Novo and nearby airstrips are less commonly used for international arrivals; Cotonou is the practical entry point for Ganvie visitors.

By Train & Bus

Train: Benin does not have a passenger rail connection to Ganvie.

Bus / Taxi + Boat: From Cotonou’s bus stations or taxi ranks, travel to the Ganvie jetty (often via Gbéto or Ganvié dock areas) and then take a motorised pirogue across Lake Nokoué to Ganvie. Boat crossings are frequent and the standard way to reach the stilt village; fares are typically paid at the dock.

How to Get Around Ganvie #

Ganvié is a water village and is reached only by boat from Cotonou or nearby Sô‑Ava; pirogues are the normal mode of transport and boats also serve as the village’s streets. Arrange boat transfers through reputable operators or your hotel in Cotonou; trips from Cotonou usually take around an hour or more depending on the route and stops.
