How to Get to Ouidah#

Ouidah is easiest reached via Cotonou Cadjehoun Airport (COO) followed by a short road transfer. Overland connections use shared minibuses and taxis from Cotonou’s transport hubs.

By Air

Cotonou Cadjehoun Airport (COO): The main international airport for southern Benin is Cotonou. Ouidah is about 40-50 km west of Cotonou - transfer by taxi or shared minibus is common and takes around 45-75 minutes depending on traffic. Typical shared‑taxi or shuttle fares are roughly 500-1,500 XOF per person; private taxis cost more.

Porto‑Novo (no major airport): Porto‑Novo does not have major scheduled flights - most international arrivals use Cotonou and then travel by road to the Atlantique coast.

By Train & Bus

Train: Benin has no passenger rail service connecting Cotonou and Ouidah.

Bus / Road: Regular bush taxis/shared minibuses (sometimes called gbaka or zémidjan for very short hops) run between Cotonou and Ouidah from the main bus/transport hubs in Cotonou. The drive is roughly 45-75 minutes; expect to pay about 500-1,500 XOF for a shared minibus and more for a private taxi. Local moto‑taxis (zémidjan) handle very short trips within Ouidah.

  • Shared minibuses / bush taxis (500-1,500 XOF) - Shared minibuses from Cotonou to Ouidah are the most economical option and depart from Cotonou’s main transport terminals. They’re frequent but can be crowded; luggage space is limited, so pack light or take a private taxi if you have lots of luggage.
  • Private taxi (2,000-6,000 XOF (approx.)) - Private taxis give door‑to‑door service between Cotonou and Ouidah and are faster and more comfortable than shared minibuses. Negotiate the fare before departing; drivers expect cash in XOF.
  • Local moto‑taxi (zémidjan) (100-500 XOF per short trip) - Moto‑taxis are ubiquitous for short trips inside Ouidah and are the quickest way to navigate the town’s narrow streets. Always agree a fare or use common local rates; helmets may not be provided consistently.
  • Bicycle / short rent (Varies locally) - Bicycles are a pleasant way to explore coastal Ouidah and the Route of Slaves sites at a relaxed pace. Rentals are informal; arrange through guesthouses or local shops.
  • Walking - The central part of Ouidah - the waterfront, museum areas and the Route des Esclaves - is compact and best explored on foot. Bring sun protection and water, and expect sandy or uneven surfaces in places.
