Gangdise Shan
Mountains Major mountain range across western Tibetan Plateau
A mountain range on the Tibetan Plateau in western China, Gangdise Shan draws trekkers and researchers for high-altitude landscapes, glaciated ridges, and Tibetan cultural sites in remote valleys.
Gangdise Shan (often rendered Gangdese or Gangdise) is a major mountain range on the northern edge of the Himalayan system in the Tibetan Plateau. It forms a high, tectonically active belt of peaks, glaciers and alpine terrain.
The range contains numerous high summits and glaciated valleys and contributes to the complex topography that separates the Tibetan Plateau from the main Himalayan crest. Its high ridges and icefields support alpine ecosystems and large-scale geomorphology shaped by uplift and glaciation.
The Gangdise mountains are the product of continental collision between the Indian and Eurasian plates; uplift and glacial processes have carved the present landscape over millions of years. Local human use has historically been sparse because of the extreme elevation and remoteness.
The range lies in western and central Tibet on the northern margin of the Himalayan chain. It runs roughly east-west across the southern Tibet plateau and faces high mountain valleys to the south.
