Ganga Talao, also known as Grand Bassin, is a crater lake in the Savanne District of Mauritius that functions as the island’s principal Hindu pilgrimage site. The lake and its surrounding temples are a major religious and cultural centre for the Mauritian Hindu community.

The lakeshore is lined with temples and large religious statues, including a prominent statue of Shiva and shrines to other Hindu deities; the complex is the focus of ritual ceremonies and processions. The site draws local worshippers year-round and large pilgrim processions during the festival of Maha Shivaratri.

The site developed as an inland pilgrimage location where water and rituals symbolically connect to the Ganges in India; it has become a nationally recognized sacred place with several constructed temples and devotional installations. Maintenance of the temples and paths around the lake supports both religious use and tourist visitation.

Ganga Talao lies in the highland interior of Mauritius in Savanne District, set within a volcanic crater ring and surrounded by hilly terrain. It is reached by road from population centres on the island and lies inland from the western and central coastal towns.

  • Pilgrimage: The site is Mauritius's principal Hindu pilgrimage destination, especially active during Maha Shivaratri when thousands of pilgrims gather.
  • Ritual practice: Devotees sometimes bring water from the Ganges and other sacred rivers as part of rituals held at the lake and its temples.
