Gandhi Smriti is a museum and memorial in New Delhi located on Tees January Marg, built around the house where Mahatma Gandhi spent his last 144 days. The site is dedicated to Gandhi’s life, philosophy and the circumstances of his assassination on 30 January 1948.
The museum complex contains the preserved room where Gandhi lived and was shot, a prayer ground marking the assassination spot, and galleries with photographs, letters and exhibits about his campaigns and ideas. The house retains original furnishings and the layout that reflect the period of Gandhi’s final residence.
The property was formerly a private residence known as Birla House before being converted into a public museum and memorial. The conversion preserved the house and established memorial spaces and exhibition areas to interpret Gandhi’s life and legacy for visitors.
Gandhi Smriti stands in central New Delhi on Tees January Marg, within the city’s administrative area and near other central government landmarks. It is accessible by road from central parts of the city.

Gandhi Smriti is in central New Delhi near India Gate and the Presidential estate. Nearest metro: Lok Kalyan Marg or Central Secretariat stations; from Connaught Place it’s a 15-20 minute walk or short auto/taxi ride.
Tips for Visiting Gandhi Smriti #
- Arrive early to stand where Gandhi was shot; the prayer ground can be crowded around 5:17pm (the time of the assassination) on special observance days.
- Respect the silence inside the prayer room and the small upstairs room that contains the flat where Gandhi spent his final days.
