Gandhi Smriti is a museum and memorial in New Delhi located on Tees January Marg, built around the house where Mahatma Gandhi spent his last 144 days. The site is dedicated to Gandhi’s life, philosophy and the circumstances of his assassination on 30 January 1948.

The museum complex contains the preserved room where Gandhi lived and was shot, a prayer ground marking the assassination spot, and galleries with photographs, letters and exhibits about his campaigns and ideas. The house retains original furnishings and the layout that reflect the period of Gandhi’s final residence.

The property was formerly a private residence known as Birla House before being converted into a public museum and memorial. The conversion preserved the house and established memorial spaces and exhibition areas to interpret Gandhi’s life and legacy for visitors.

Gandhi Smriti stands in central New Delhi on Tees January Marg, within the city’s administrative area and near other central government landmarks. It is accessible by road from central parts of the city.

  • Birla House origin: The site occupies the former Birla House and preserves the layout of Gandhi's last residence, including many original furnishings and the specific room where he was shot.
  • Visiting note: Entry policies and visiting hours are managed by government authorities; many visitors allow a short visit of 30-60 minutes to see the preserved room and main exhibits.
