Gandantegchinlen Monastery

Gandantegchinlen Monastery is a major Tibetan-style Buddhist monastery in central Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, originally founded in 1809. It is one of the city’s largest and most active religious institutions.

The complex contains several temple halls, a museum and the large gilded statue of Avalokiteshvara (Migjid Janraisig) that dominates the main assembly hall. The site is a focal point for public ceremonies and daily religious practice and attracts both worshippers and visitors interested in Mongolian Buddhism.

The monastery was established in the early 19th century and expanded into a substantial complex by the late 19th century. It remained one of the few monastic institutions with some degree of continuity through Mongolia’s 20th century political changes and has seen restoration and growth since the 1990s.

The monastery sits in central Ulaanbaatar and is easily reachable from the city centre. It is surrounded by urban streets and forms a visible religious landmark within the modern capital.
