Ancient town and nature reserve in the Golan Heights with archaeological ruins, an ancient synagogue, and a waterfall; visited for history, raptor migration observation, and views over the valley.
Gamla is an archaeological site and nature reserve in the Golan Heights that preserves the remains of an ancient Jewish city and the surrounding natural landscape. It is known for its ruined urban structures, fortress remains and steep cliffs.
Visitors go to view the exposed city plan, an early synagogue, the defensive walls and the dramatic cliff-edge viewpoints. Trails lead to the archaeological areas and to lookout points used for observing the local raptor population, including griffon vultures.
Historically the city was besieged and destroyed during the First Jewish-Roman War; archaeological excavations have revealed domestic structures, public architecture and the synagogue. The ruins document the urban character of the settlement prior to its destruction in the 1st century CE.
Gamla sits in the central Golan Heights above the Jordan Rift Valley, within the Israeli-declared Golan area, with the site occupying a rocky plateau and overlooking nearby valleys and watercourses.
- Vulture colony: A resident colony of griffon vultures frequents the cliffs above the ruins, making one of the site's notable wildlife attractions and viewpoints.
What to See #
- Ancient synagogue: The excavated ancient synagogue includes stone benches and architectural remains that rank among the earliest synagogue structures discovered in the region.
- City walls and ruins: The city's fortified walls, gates and terraced houses are visible in the archaeological remains and outline the urban layout prior to its destruction.
- Waterfall and nature reserve: A waterfall and steep cliffs form part of the site's natural setting; the area is also designated as a nature reserve supporting raptor colonies.
