Galveston Island

Galveston Island is a barrier island on the Gulf Coast of Texas that contains the city of Galveston and a mix of beaches, historic districts and protected parkland. It is a long-established port and seaside resort on the Texas Gulf shoreline.

The island’s principal visitor attractions include the Strand Historic District with 19th-century commercial architecture, a long protective seawall and public beachfronts, a family-focused amusement pier and several nature areas such as Galveston Island State Park. The combination of historic urban fabric and beaches makes the island a varied destination for both cultural tourism and coastal recreation.

Galveston was heavily affected by the 1900 hurricane, after which large-scale protective works and rebuilding shaped the modern shoreline and urban defences. The island continues to host port facilities, tourism infrastructure and seasonal events.

Geographically the island lies off the Texas coast and is reachable by road from Houston across causeway bridges, sitting between Galveston Bay and the Gulf of Mexico.

• Distance to Houston: The island lies on the Gulf Coast roughly 50 miles (about 80 kilometres) southeast of Houston and is the site of the city of Galveston.
• Seawall and protection: Following the catastrophic hurricane of 1900 the city built the Seawall and raised parts of the island to reduce flood risk.

What to See #

• The Strand Historic District: A historic commercial district with preserved 19th-century brick buildings now housing shops, restaurants and museums along a central pedestrian street.
• Galveston Seawall: A continuous seawall that protects much of the developed north shore and provides a long public promenade and beach access.
• Galveston Island State Park: A state park on the western part of the island offering managed beaches, birdwatching and nature trails across dunes and wetlands.
• Pleasure Pier: An amusement pier extending over the Gulf with rides and attractions geared to family visitors and tourists.
