Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II
Museum Historic Milan shopping arcade with ornate glass dome
In Milan, the 19th‑century Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II is a glass‑roofed arcade beside the Duomo, lined with luxury shops, cafés and mosaic floors where visitors shop, dine and photograph the architecture.
The Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II is a 19th-century glass-and-iron covered shopping arcade in central Milan, Italy, completed and inaugurated in 1877. It is one of the world’s earliest shopping arcades and links Piazza del Duomo with Piazza della Scala.
The building’s architectural highlight is the large central octagonal space topped by a vaulted glass dome, with two crossed shopping galleries lined by shops and cafés. The structure features extensive mosaic floors and an iron-and-glass roof that creates a continuous interior space through the arcade.
Designed by architect Giuseppe Mengoni, construction began in 1865 and the gallery was opened in stages and formally completed in 1877. Over time the Galleria has housed luxury retail, historic cafés and has been restored several times to preserve its ironwork, glass and mosaics.
The arcade sits in Milan’s historic centre directly between the cathedral and the La Scala opera house, within walking distance of central railway stations and major tram routes.
- Timing: Best seen early morning or late evening to avoid the heaviest tourist crowds and to photograph the glass vault without dense reflections.
- Local Tradition: Spinning once on the bull mosaic with a heel on its testicles is a long-standing local tourist tradition and often draws a crowd.
What to See #
- Central Octagon: Sits between Piazza del Duomo and Piazza della Scala and is built as a cruciform, double-arcade passage with a central octagonal space topped by a glass-and-iron dome; the arcades contain mosaic floors and ground-floor shops and cafés.
- North and South Passages: Runs along the two main arms of the mall and hosts luxury boutiques and historic cafés beneath the vaulted glass roof that dates from the 19th century.
- Bull Mosaic: A mosaic of a bull on the floor near the central octagon is a local tradition spot where people perform a rotation on their heel for luck.
How to Get to Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II #
The Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II sits beside Piazza del Duomo in central Milan. The Duomo metro station (M1 red line and M3 yellow line) exits directly onto Piazza del Duomo; the Galleria entrance is a few minutes’ walk from the station.
From Milano Centrale station take the M3 (yellow line) or suburban trains into the centre and change to the metro if needed - Duomo station is the most convenient stop. If driving, follow city centre signs to the Duomo/Piazza del Duomo and use nearby public parking garages; the Galleria itself is pedestrianised.
Tips for Visiting Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II #
- Go early in the morning, just after sunrise, to photograph the arcade's architecture and mosaics with far fewer people around; late evening is also quieter for seeing the lights without daytime crowds.
- Buy tickets or book a table at one of the upper‑level cafés if you want a less frenetic vantage point over the arcade - dining upstairs gives a calmer view of the Galleria than standing on the busy ground floor.
- If you want to see the historic mosaic bull without the densest crowds, visit on a weekday outside peak tourist season; be aware the 'spinning on the bull' tradition is visible but discouraged in some establishments.
Best Time to Visit Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II #
The Galleria is best visited on weekday mornings outside peak tourist months to avoid the busiest crowds and fully appreciate the architecture.
