How to Get to Galkayo
Galkayo is accessed mainly by air via Galkayo Airport (GLK) and by road using regional coach and minibus services. There is no passenger rail service; most arrivals come by plane or overland coach depending on your origin and security situation.
Galkayo Airport (GLK): The city’s main airport, Galkayo Airport, handles regional flights and charter services. From the airport to the city centre you can take a local taxi (no meter) - the drive is roughly 10-20 minutes depending on checkpoint delays; expect to negotiate a fare in the order of about US$5-15. Some hotels and NGOs also offer pre-arranged pick-ups (confirm price and clearance in advance).
Train: There is no passenger rail service in Somalia, so rail travel is not an option for reaching or moving around Galkayo.
Bus: Intercity coaches and shared minibuses (often called matatus or small coaches) connect Galkayo with regional towns such as Garowe, Bosaso and other points in Puntland and Galmudug. Boarding usually occurs at the main bus/minibus area near the city centre; travel times vary widely by route and road/security conditions (from a few hours to 10+ hours for long regional trips). Fares are route-dependent but typically range from around US$5-30 for regional journeys; always confirm price and departure time at the terminal before boarding.
How to Get Around Galkayo
Galkayo is best navigated by a mix of taxis and shared minibuses for regional journeys; for safety and convenience, private car hire with a driver is often the best choice for visitors. Walking works for short trips in central areas, but always check local guidance and avoid walking at night.
- Shared minibuses / coaches (US$1-30) - Shared minibuses and regional coaches are the backbone of overland travel to and from Galkayo. They operate from the main bus/minibus area near the city centre and run to nearby regional hubs (schedules are informal and can change with security/road conditions). For longer intercity trips expect basic vehicles and stops along the route; buy your ticket at the terminal and allow plenty of time for delays.
- Taxis (US$3-15) - Taxis are the most convenient way to get around the city and from the airport; meters are rare so fares are negotiated. Short trips across town commonly cost a few dollars; insist on an agreed price before you start and be aware of checkpoints that can add time. Use hotel-recommended drivers when possible for smoother communication and security.
- Bajaj / Auto-rickshaws (US$0.5-3) - Three-wheeled bajajs are common for short trips and are cheaper than taxis for solo travellers. They're good for quick hops inside neighbourhoods but carry little luggage and offer minimal protection from weather. Negotiate fares up front; prices are typically a couple of dollars per short trip.
- Motorcycle taxis (US$1-5) - Motorcycle taxis are widely available and are the fastest way through congested streets, but they carry safety risks and offer no weather protection. Use them only for very short journeys and avoid at night; wear a helmet if one is provided and agree the price beforehand.
- Car hire with driver / private 4x4 (US$40-200/day) - For travellers or groups needing flexibility and security, hiring a private car with a driver (often a 4x4) is common. This is the recommended option for escorted day trips or travel into rural areas where road conditions and checkpoints are an issue. Rates vary by vehicle type and itinerary; expect to pay from tens to a few hundred US dollars per day depending on distance and security arrangements.
- Walking - Many central neighbourhoods are compact and walkable for short errands and to reach local shops, markets and the main bus area. Exercise caution, stay aware of your surroundings, and avoid walking after dark in unfamiliar areas; use local advice from your accommodation about safe routes.
