Gagra Range
Mountains Coastal Caucasus range characterized by steep limestone slopes
Along Abkhazia’s Black Sea coast the Gagra Range rises from coastal cliffs to forested peaks. Visitors follow mountain trails, visit Soviet‑era resort towns like Gagra, and combine beach time with hiking and views across subtropical valleys.
The Gagra Range is a mountain chain in northwestern Abkhazia (Georgia) forming part of the southern slopes of the Greater Caucasus. The range overlooks the Black Sea and the coastal town of Gagra.
The range is notable for steep, wooded slopes that descend to the coastal plain and for viewpoints offering sea vistas. It is visited for mountain walks, local nature and views over the Black Sea rather than for large organised alpine infrastructure.
The Gagra foothills and coastal zone have been settled and traversed for centuries; the mountains have long marked the transition between coastal and highland environments in the northwestern Caucasus.
The range runs immediately inland from the Black Sea coast around the town of Gagra in the Abkhazia region on the western edge of the Caucasus.
- Coastal position: The range forms part of the coastal foothills of the Greater Caucasus and rises directly above the Black Sea near the town of Gagra.
How to Get to Gagra Range #
Gagra town on the Black Sea coast serves as the main gateway to the range. From Sukhumi (if accessible) it’s a short coastal drive west; international travelers normally reach the region via Georgian-controlled points where permitted, or through Russian routes into Abkhazia-check current entry requirements and advisories.
Tips for Visiting Gagra Range #
- If crossing from the Georgian side, check travel advisories and border controls-Abkhazia's status can complicate transit.
- Bring layered clothing: the coastal slopes can be mild while higher ridges get chilly and windy.
- Seek local guides in Gagra or New Athos who know the safe routes; many trails are unofficial and subject to weather.
