Fustat

Archaeological Site Medieval Egyptian capital ruins beneath modern Old Cairo

Near Old Cairo, Fustat was Egypt’s first Islamic capital founded after the Arab conquest; archaeological remains, mosques and museums draw visitors interested in early Islamic urban history.

Fustat was the early Islamic garrison-city founded near the Nile delta after the Arab conquest of Egypt and became the region’s principal administrative and military settlement from the mid 7th century AD. It occupies the area of what is now Old Cairo and gives its name to the archaeological remains in that quarter.

Today the site is represented by archaeological remains and the early Mosque of ʿAmr ibn al-ʿAs, founded in the 7th century and recognised as Egypt’s earliest mosque. Interpretive displays and excavated areas show the street pattern and building phases of the original city, though much of the ancient fabric lies under or adjacent to modern urban development.

Fustat was established by the Arab commander ʿAmr ibn al-ʿAs in about 641 AD as a military and administrative centre for Islamic Egypt and remained an important city through the Umayyad and Abbasid periods. The settlement’s prominence declined after the Fatimid foundation of Cairo in 969 AD, and the city suffered major damage and partial destruction during events such as the deliberate burning ordered during the 12th century; over time it became absorbed into the expanding urban area of medieval and modern Cairo.

The archaeological zone lies within the Old Cairo district on the eastern bank of the Nile, south of the modern downtown, adjacent to Coptic Cairo and the area of the Babylon Fortress and accessible from central Cairo by road.

  • Founding date and role: Founded as a garrison-city immediately after the Arab conquest of Egypt in 641 AD, it served as the provincial administrative centre for the early Islamic period.
  • Later history: Much of the original city declined after the Fatimid foundation of Cairo in the 10th century, and the site contains layered archaeological remains from multiple periods.
