Fujiwara-kyō was an early Japanese capital located in present-day Nara Prefecture, established as a planned seat of government in the late 7th century. It served as the imperial capital during the Asuka period.
Visitors encounter archaeological remains of the palace precinct and the city grid revealed by excavations, including foundations of palace buildings and streets. An on-site archaeological park and displays summarize the layout and finds from the capital period.
Fujiwara-kyō was constructed as an imperial capital in the late 7th century and functioned as the seat of the court until the capital moved to Heijō-kyō (Nara) in the early 8th century. The site was laid out on a rectilinear grid influenced by continental planning and was later abandoned as the court relocated.
The site lies in central Nara Prefecture near the modern city of Kashihara on Honshu, within the broader Asuka-Fujiwara region of early Japanese state formation.
