About Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum

The Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum is a presidential archive and museum complex located in Hyde Park, New York, on the Hudson River. It opened in 1941 and was the first presidential library established in the United States.

Exhibits present Roosevelt’s presidential papers, photographs, campaign materials and artifacts relating to the New Deal and World War II; the complex also interprets his personal life and the workings of his administration. The library functions as both an archival repository and a public museum.

The library and museum were created under Roosevelt’s direction to preserve his records for public use and research, and they have been expanded and maintained by the National Archives and partner organizations since 1941. The adjacent Springwood estate was the family home and is interpreted through guided tours.

The complex stands in Hyde Park, Dutchess County, on the east bank of the Hudson River, immediately adjacent to the Springwood estate and within a short drive of Poughkeepsie and other Hudson Valley communities.
