Historical Site Coastal forts and castles linked to Atlantic trade history

Forts and Castles, Volta, Greater Accra, Central and Western Regions is a serial World Heritage designation covering numerous European-built forts, castles and trading posts along Ghana’s southern coast. The property documents the architectural and historical legacy of maritime trade from the 15th to the 19th centuries.
Major complexes include large coastal castles with multiple defensive works, warehouses and living quarters that changed hands among Portuguese, Dutch, British and other European powers. These forts functioned as centres for coastal trade, provisioning and the forced export of enslaved people.
Construction began in the later 15th century and continued for several centuries as European powers established and contested footholds on the West African coast. Many of the forts were rebuilt or adapted repeatedly in response to changing military and commercial needs.
The forts are distributed along Ghana’s southern shoreline on the Gulf of Guinea, stretching from the Volta Region in the east through Greater Accra and the Central and Western Regions to the west. Key sites are located close to historic port towns such as Elmina and Cape Coast.
