The Fortress of the Immaculate Conception (Fortaleza de la Inmaculada Concepción) is a colonial-era river fortress at El Castillo on Nicaragua’s San Juan River that guarded river access inland. The fortress dates to the colonial period and is a prominent historic monument in Río San Juan Department.
The fort presents substantial stone and masonry walls and bastions overlooking the river, with walkable ramparts and river views. A small museum and interpretation within the fort explain its role in controlling navigation on the San Juan River.
Built during the Spanish colonial era and rebuilt and modified over subsequent centuries, the fortress served to protect inland routes from maritime attack and to control movement along the San Juan River. It has been the focus of military action and restoration work at different times in its history.
Sited at the town of El Castillo on the San Juan River in southern Nicaragua, the fortress stands on the riverbank and is commonly reached by river boat or road from nearby settlements.
