Main image

Fort Vancouver National Historic Site preserves the site of a 19th-century Hudson’s Bay Company fur-trade fort and associated historic buildings on the Columbia River. The original fort served as the administrative center for the company’s Columbia District in the 1800s.

The site includes a reconstructed fort with palisades and period structures, interpretive exhibits about trade and settlement, and preserved residential buildings such as the Officers’ Row. Visitors can tour the reconstructed stockade and museum displays that explain the fort’s role in regional commerce and settlement.

The original Fort Vancouver was established by the Hudson’s Bay Company in the early 1820s and functioned as the company’s Columbia District headquarters through much of the 19th century. Over time the site changed hands and uses; the National Historic Site preserves and interprets its fur-trade, military and civic history.

The site lies in present-day Vancouver, Washington, on the north bank of the Columbia River across from the Portland, Oregon metropolitan area, a short drive from downtown Vancouver and Portland.
