Fort Ross is a historic Russian colonial settlement and former trading-post complex on the Sonoma County coast of northern California. It was established by the Russian-American Company in 1812 and functioned as an agricultural and fur-trading outpost.

Today the site is a state historic park featuring reconstructed wooden buildings, a small museum and interpretive exhibits that cover the Russian period, interactions with local Native American peoples and later American history. Visitors typically tour the blockhouse, chapel and living quarters and view archaeological remains on the headland.

Founded in 1812 by Russian colonists, the fort operated through the 1820s and 1830s and was abandoned and sold in the early 1840s. The property was later preserved and developed as a public historic park that interprets the early 19th century colonial era.

Fort Ross is located on a coastal promontory in Sonoma County, on California’s north-central coast, northwest of the greater San Francisco Bay Area. The site sits on rugged coastal bluffs with views out over the Pacific Ocean and is reached by local roads from coastal towns in Sonoma County.

  • Founding date and role: Founded by the Russian-American Company in 1812, it served as the southernmost Russian outpost in North America during the Russian colonial period.
  • Later history: Abandoned in the early 1840s and later preserved as a California historic park with reconstructed buildings and interpretive displays.
