Fort Provintia
Monument Dutch-era redbrick fort in historic Tainan
In Tainan’s old quarter, Fort Provintia (Chihkan Tower) offers Dutch colonial-era walls, gardens and museum displays; visitors come for architecture, local history and nearby markets.
Fort Provintia is a historic fort complex in central Tainan, Taiwan, originally constructed by the Dutch East India Company in the mid-17th century. The site is now commonly known by its Chinese name and includes the red-brick tower called Chihkan Tower with associated courtyards and shrines.
The complex offers short museum displays, temple spaces and historic architecture that blend Dutch colonial masonry with later Chinese additions and repairs. It is a compact, frequently visited cultural landmark within Tainan city, valued for its layered colonial and local history rather than grand scale.
The fort was constructed by the Dutch in 1653 as part of their southern Formosa presence and was taken by Ming loyalist forces under Zheng Chenggong (Koxinga) during the mid-17th century. Subsequent centuries saw the site adapted for local administrative and religious uses and repaired or rebuilt at various times.
Fort Provintia sits in the historic heart of Tainan, within walking distance of other heritage sites and the old city center; it is easily reached from downtown Tainan.
