Main image

Fort Macon State Park is a North Carolina state park on Bogue Banks centered on an antebellum masonry seacoast fort built between 1826 and 1834. The fort is a preserved example of early 19th-century coastal defenses.

The park features the restored brick-and-stone fort with interior rooms and interpretive exhibits, plus Atlantic Ocean beaches, dunes and coastal trails. A visitor center offers historical displays and seasonal guided tours of the fort.

Constructed as part of the United States’ Third System of seacoast fortifications in the early 19th century, the fort saw action during the Civil War and later periods before being preserved and managed for public interpretation. Restoration work preserved the fort’s casemates and gun emplacements for museum use.

The park sits on the eastern end of Bogue Banks at Atlantic Beach on North Carolina’s Crystal Coast, adjacent to Morehead City and Beaufort.

  • Fort access: Guided and self-guided tours frequently allow entry into the fort's interior casemates and gun emplacements; check the park schedule for seasonal hours.
  • Practical tip: The park combines historic interpretation with coastal recreation-bring tide-appropriate clothing for beach access and wind protection on exposed ocean-facing walls.
