Fort Douaumont
Museum Verdun WWI fort and key battle site
On the plains near Verdun, Fort Douaumont is a heavily visited World War I site where battlefield tours, memorials and preserved fortifications explain the 1916 fighting.
Fort Douaumont is the largest and most prominent fort in the ring of forts around Verdun in northeastern France. It is a ruined modern fortification closely associated with the 1916 Battle of Verdun in World War I.
The site presents ruined ramparts, artillery positions and extensive underground galleries that are an important draw for visitors to the Verdun battlefields. Walking routes and interpretive panels allow people to see casemates, defensive works and parts of the fort’s interior layout; much of what is visible today is war damage and post-war ruin rather than intact 19th-century fabric.
The fort was built in the late 19th century as part of the defensive ring around Verdun and became a focal point during the 1916 Battle of Verdun when German forces captured it early in the offensive and French forces recaptured it later in the year. These events gave the fort its primary historical significance as a symbol of the Verdun campaign.
Fort Douaumont stands within the Verdun battlefield area in the Grand Est region of France, a short drive north of the town of Verdun. It is visited as part of battlefield tours that include nearby memorials and cemeteries.
- 1916 capture and recapture: The fort was captured by German forces early in the 1916 Battle of Verdun and later retaken by French troops during the same campaign; the site is preserved as a ruin and open to visitors.
- Visitor context: Visits are commonly combined with the Douaumont Ossuary and other Verdun battlefield sites; guided tours help explain battlefield context and underground structures.
What to See #
- Underground galleries: A network of interior galleries, barracks and casemates that run beneath the fort and were used for troop accommodation, ammunition storage and communication during World War I.
- Ramparts and surface works: The ruined ramparts, artillery casemates and surface defenses that remain visible today and form the principal visitor areas of the site.
