Fort and Shalamar Gardens in Lahore

Fort and Shalamar Gardens in Lahore are a UNESCO World Heritage property that groups the historic Lahore Fort and the Shalimar Gardens, exemplary of Mughal architecture and garden design. The ensemble is one of the principal Mughal heritage sites in the Indian subcontinent.

The Lahore Fort is a large palace-fort complex that includes richly decorated chambers and monumental gateways, while the Shalimar Gardens are a formal Mughal pleasure garden with terraces, water channels and fountains. Together they illustrate imperial court life, monumental architecture and garden planning.

Major phases of construction and decoration date to the Mughal period, with successive emperors adding buildings, ornament and waterworks; later restorations and repairs have modified parts of both sites. The gardens were created as an imperial leisure garden, and the fort served as a royal residence and seat of administration at different times.

Both monuments are located within the city of Lahore in Pakistan’s Punjab province, on the western bank of the Ravi River corridor through the urban area. They lie within the historic core of Lahore and are accessible from the city centre.
