Foja Mountains

The Foja Mountains are a remote mountain range in Papua province, Indonesia, covered by largely intact tropical rainforest and montane ecosystems. The area is important for biodiversity and has been the focus of scientific expeditions in recent decades.

This is not a developed tourist destination; fieldwork and guided research visits are the usual reasons people travel here rather than conventional sightseeing. The terrain includes steep rainforest-covered ridges and river valleys and conditions can be rugged and wet.

Modern scientific exploration notably increased in the early 2000s when international teams made a series of biological surveys documenting many species new to science. The region remains largely undeveloped and is valued for its intact habitats and endemic flora and fauna.

Geographically the Foja Mountains lie in the central-northern portion of New Guinea within Indonesia’s Papua province; they are inland, surrounded by lowland rainforest and river systems and are separated from major population centers by long distances and difficult terrain.
