Fogo is a volcanic island in Cape Verde’s Sotavento group, notable for its single, dominant stratovolcano. The island’s central peak, Pico do Fogo, rises to about 2,829 metres and shapes the landscape.

Hiking and volcano-focused visits are the main draws, with routes to the crater and the agricultural communities inside the caldera. Visitors also see terraced farms, vineyards and small coastal towns, and the island offers a mix of coastal roads and mountain trails.

The island has been repeatedly affected and reshaped by eruptions over time; communities live and farm on volcanic soils inside the caldera and around its slopes. Volcanic activity has driven both destruction and renewal, influencing settlement patterns.

Fogo lies west of mainland Africa as part of Cape Verde, with the port town of São Filipe on the island’s west coast serving as the main transport hub for inter-island flights and ferries.

  • Pico do Fogo height: The island's highest point is Pico do Fogo at about 2,829 metres, and day hikes to the crater are a primary attraction.
  • Access: There is an airport at São Filipe with inter-island flights, and ferries also connect Fogo with other Cape Verde islands.

What to See #

  • Pico do Fogo: The central volcanic peak of the island reaches 2,829 metres and dominates hiking routes and views across the archipelago.
  • Chã das Caldeiras: A wide, volcanic caldera-Chã das Caldeiras-contains farms and small villages at the volcano's base and is the focal point for local vineyards and agriculture.
  • São Filipe: São Filipe is the island's main port town on the west coast and serves as the usual entry point for ferries and local services.

Regular domestic flights connect Praia (Santiago) with São Filipe Airport on Fogo; there are also inter‑island ferries to São Filipe port though schedules can be irregular. Tips for Visiting Fogo, Cape Verde #

  • Start the Pico do Fogo ascent from Chã das Caldeiras early in the morning to avoid midday heat and to maximize visibility for the summit views.
  • Hire a local guide and arrange 4x4 transport from São Filipe or the caldera entrance-roads into Chã das Caldeiras are rough and local guides know current trail and safety conditions.
  • Consider spending a night in Chã das Caldeiras to catch sunrise on the volcanic landscape and to visit small coffee and wine producers in the caldera; accommodation is limited, so book ahead.
  • Check inter‑island flight and ferry schedules before planning your stay-connections to Fogo from Santiago or São Vicente can be infrequent and subject to change, so confirm transport in advance.
