Fogo is a volcanic island in Cape Verde’s Sotavento group, notable for its single, dominant stratovolcano. The island’s central peak, Pico do Fogo, rises to about 2,829 metres and shapes the landscape.

From São Filipe town the island’s main roads link settlements; driving around much of the island takes under an hour, while the road up to the volcanic caldera (Chã das Caldeiras) is steep and typically requires a 45-60 minute drive on rough surfaces.
