Fogo, Cape Verde
Island Volcanic Cape Verde island dominated by Pico do Fogo
Fogo island centers on Pico do Fogo, an active stratovolcano; visitors hike volcanic slopes, walk across recent lava fields and sample strong local coffee and island wines.
Fogo is a volcanic island in Cape Verde’s Sotavento group, notable for its single, dominant stratovolcano. The island’s central peak, Pico do Fogo, rises to about 2,829 metres and shapes the landscape.
Hiking and volcano-focused visits are the main draws, with routes to the crater and the agricultural communities inside the caldera. Visitors also see terraced farms, vineyards and small coastal towns, and the island offers a mix of coastal roads and mountain trails.
The island has been repeatedly affected and reshaped by eruptions over time; communities live and farm on volcanic soils inside the caldera and around its slopes. Volcanic activity has driven both destruction and renewal, influencing settlement patterns.
Fogo lies west of mainland Africa as part of Cape Verde, with the port town of São Filipe on the island’s west coast serving as the main transport hub for inter-island flights and ferries.
