Flint Castle is a 13th-century Norman castle ruin located at the town of Flint in north Wales, built on the banks of the River Dee estuary. It was constructed on the orders of King Edward I during his campaigns in Wales.
The site comprises surviving curtain walls and masonry forming a compact medieval fortress sited to control the estuary approach. The castle is visited for its historical ruins, defensive earthworks and views over the Dee estuary and surrounding lowlands.
Flint Castle was erected by royal authority in the late 1200s as part of a chain of fortifications in north Wales and served as a military and administrative place through the medieval period. Over subsequent centuries it fell into ruin and now remains as a managed historic site and ruin.
The castle occupies a prominent position overlooking the River Dee in the town of Flint, Flintshire, on the northeastern edge of Wales, close to the English border and the Dee estuary.
