Finsteraarhorn

Finsteraarhorn is the highest mountain of the Bernese Alps, rising to 4,274 metres and dominating a large glaciated massif in Switzerland. It is a prominent, remote peak noted for its height within the Bernese range.

Climbing routes approach across glaciers and ridges and are typically undertaken by experienced alpinists using roped glacier travel and mountaineering techniques. The mountain is less frequented than lower summits because of its remoteness and demanding access.

The peak has long been a focus of alpine exploration and mapping in the 19th century and remains a classical objective for serious climbers. It forms part of the high alpine landscape of central Switzerland with extensive icefields and glacial valleys.

Finsteraarhorn sits in the Bernese Oberland region of Switzerland and is accessed from valleys that drain into the Aare and Rhone basins; the nearest larger tourist centres include towns in the Bernese Oberland region.
