Fifth Avenue

Fifth Avenue is a principal north-south avenue in Manhattan, New York City, famed for its shopping, cultural institutions and iconic city landmarks. It functions as both a commercial thoroughfare and a ceremonial address line for major Manhattan buildings.

A distinguished section of the avenue runs along the east side of Central Park from 59th Street to 110th Street, where it also hosts a concentration of museums known as Museum Mile. Further south and north the avenue is lined with flagship retail stores, corporate headquarters and landmark buildings that draw global visitors.

Historically the avenue evolved in the 19th and 20th centuries from an elite residential address into a mixed commercial and cultural boulevard, with major 20th-century developments shaping its modern character. Today it remains one of the city’s most visited and photographed streets.

Fifth Avenue runs the length of Manhattan’s primary north-south axis, passing through Midtown and the Upper East Side and forming the eastern edge of Central Park in central Manhattan.
