Feldherrnhalle
Area Munich neoclassical monument and historic military memorial
On Munich’s Odeonsplatz, the Feldherrnhalle is a 19th-century loggia modeled on Italian prototypes; visitors note its neoclassical colonnade and its role in modern German history.
The Feldherrnhalle is a monumental loggia on Odeonsplatz in central Munich, Bavaria, built in the mid-19th century as a memorial to Bavarian military leaders. It serves as a prominent urban landmark on one side of the square.
The structure was commissioned by King Ludwig I and incorporates sculptural groups and an open loggia inspired by Italian Renaissance precedents. It occupies a central position adjacent to the Theatinerkirche and the route between Marienplatz and the Residenz.
The site later acquired political significance in the 20th century as the scene of clashes connected with the 1923 Beer Hall Putsch and was used for propaganda during the Nazi period; post-war authorities removed the Nazi memorials. Today it remains a frequently visited monument in Munich’s historic centre.

- Historic events: Location of a confrontation during the 1923 Beer Hall Putsch; a Nazi-era memorial once stood at the site but was removed after 1945.
